ash wednesday – start of lent

So, I’m not the most devout Catholic, but I make an attempt with it. Today is Ash Wednesday, the start of the period of Lent. Aside from the meaning of Lent in the Bible, Catholics and other Christians take this time to declare a sacrifice…something they will choose to abstain from for the entire Lenten period, until Easter Sunday. On top of that, they abstain from eating meat on Fridays, fish is acceptable.

In years past, I always thought about something to give up, but ended up just forgetting or not taking things seriously. This year, I’ve decided that I’m going to go meatless…or should say vegetarian. Now some of you might think, yeah, yeah, well during this period we’re not supposed to have meat on Fridays anyway. But, I will be eating neither meat or fish…the ENTIRE period. Not just on Fridays. So, starting today, Wednesday, February 17, 2010 to Saturday, April 3, 2010 (Easter is April 3rd). That is 60 days, and 60 nights folks!

There is, however, one exception…I’ve already purchased tickets for Philly Cooks and there’s no way I can’t eat meat there. I’m a huge food freak as you probably already know and I’m just not going to waste my ticket to this amazing event!

Anyway, I still think it’s going to be a challenge…but I’m up for it. For once, I feel like I can get something out of this Lenten period…really sticking to a commitment.

I will be trying to post daily what I have consumed/cooked for the day. Just something to keep track as well as to prove I have not been cheating.

I have to be honest, I’m pretty friggin excited!
