pyt – cheesesteak pretzel roll burger & krispy kreme burger

I finally got around to trying two PYT burgers that have been on my list for a bit, the Cheesesteak Pretzel Roll Burger and the Krispy Kreme Burger.

The Cheesesteak Pretzel Roll Burger was quite enjoyable. It consists of a beef patty topped with cheddar, cheesesteak, whiz, onions, and is served on a Philly Pretzel Factory pretzel roll. I feel that this combination of cheesesteak, burger, and pretzel was executed just fine. Only wish the roll was a smidge softer.

When Tommy Up debuted the Krispy Kreme burger, I was intrigued. The Krispy Kreme burger at PYT consists of two beef patties topped with American cheese and strips of chocolate covered bacon sandwiched between a split and toasted Krispy Kreme doughnut. I also told myself I could never order that on my own since I’d have to eat all of it on my own…I mean, look at it! I’m sure you feel guilt just looking! So, the opportunity for me to try this came about when my brother joined me for a meal and that’s what he wanted to get. Lucky for him, he’s a hardcore runner type, so I guess the effects of a meal like this would be negated much quicker than my less than active lifestyle. I took a couple bites…wow. This was actually pretty good. There was a yummy mix of sweet and salty throughout. Lucky for me, they have Krispy Kreme sliders on the menu now, so I don’t have to fully indulge in a whole.

10 arts – 10 arts cheeseburger

I rarely have the luxury of eating at 10 Arts due to lack of extra cash in my wallet. I also rarely have the opportunity to have lunch in Center City. Last week, however, I made it out to try the 10 Arts Cheeseburger.

The 10 Arts Cheeseburger is made up of Pineland Farms ground sirloin. It’s served on a brioche bun with cheddar, pickles, lettuce, tomato, red onion, ketchup, and mustard. The burger was ordered medium rare and fries were chosen as the accompaniment over a salad.

This burger had more of a traditional flavor profile. Of course a brioche bun doesn’t fit into traditional but it tasted great. It stood tall and was very neatly assembled considering the 50/50 ratio of toppings to burger. The bun held it’s own and no ingredient fell onto the plate except for some ketchup and mustard drippings. I’m a fan. The fries were also delicious. They had a tasty seasoning and were cooked perfectly.

I almost left without dessert, but that would have been a no-no. Since I couldn’t really decide on something, I had Pastry Chef Monica Glass choose for me. She brought out her Vanilla Cheesecake Tart. The tart was topped with honeycomb ice cream, pistachio powder, caramelized pistachios, pomegranate verbena gelee, lemon verbena, frozen pomegranate seeds, and bee pollen. Despite the food coma I was already in, getting dessert was a great decision. That tart was damn good!

I want to come back to try Chef Jen Carroll’s five course tasting as well as the Five-Bite Lunch. I need to have those pretzels!

When a friend suggested we have dinner & drinks at Pub & Kitchen, I immediately agreed. It has been way too long that I’ve neglected this place. P&K was formerly known for their Windsor burger, a burger which was topped with English cheddar and homemade bacon. I unfortunately never got to try the Windsor burger before their latest burger, the Churchill, debuted.

The Churchill’s burger is a dry aged custom blend from Pat LaFrieda, the man responsible for the meat used in the burgers at NYC’s Shake Shack, Minetta Tavern, and The Spotted Pig. The bone marrow glazed beef is topped with sauteed onions before being placed on a Metropolitan Bakery brioche bun. (via Foobooz)

Prior to the burger though, deviled eggs and veal sweetbreads (on special) were ordered as appetizers. The deviled eggs came with a tasty sauce and the sweetbreads were served with a frisee salad. Both appetizer dishes were delicious. This was also my first time having deviled eggs. I’m officially a fan!

Before I go any further, I do want to say that I find burgers to be a very intimate and personal thing. When I consume a burger, from the moment I pick it up, I rarely, if at all, put it back down once it has been picked up for the first bite. It will stay there in the grasp of my left hand until it is finished. I will also not speak much to anyone at the table next to me aside from some food moans or “Oh my god, this is so good/bad,” partly due to the fact that most burgers can get quite messy (hands/face/plate) and I feel that the burger needs to be finished before I engage in further conversation. I mention this because some of these things changed when I consumed the Churchill.

I ordered a medium rare Churchill…with added Great Hill blue cheese. I wasn’t going to add any extra additions but I honestly couldn’t resist adding blue cheese to a burger if that’s an option. Holy crap. The burger was so juicy and tasty. There was also an airiness to the burger, a good thing. For the first time in my life I consumed a large burger while simultaneously holding conversation with my fellow diners. In addition, the bun held up to the burger. There were no juices running off the burger destroying the bun and further running off to my fingers…none of this at all. The fries that came along with the burger were also fantastic. Does clean hands at the end of the meal plus being able to converse with my fellow diners mean a perfect burger? Of course not, but that in addition to being an absolutely tasty burger certainly makes it come close. To add to my euphoria, I washed down the meal with a Sixpoint Middleton Ale, specially made for P&K.

Some of the others ordered fish & chips, which smelled and looked incredible. They were served with a side of mashed peas which I’ve been told are delicious. My problem next time is resisting a Churchill and ordering the fish & chips. Anyone want to do half/half with me?

oyster house – oh burger

I had a burger lunch with a friend in Center City a few weeks ago. Our original location was 500° but since they were closed for lunch temporarily due to adjacent building construction, we decided to go to the Oyster House.

You may be thinking, “Why would you go to the Oyster House when you were looking to eat a burger?” Well, just because their main draw is oysters doesn’t mean that they can’t serve a good burger, so why not!

I ordered a medium rare OH Burger. The OH Burger is made up of a grass fed beef patty, blue cheese, grilled onions, and a fried oyster. It is served on a brioche bun next to a pickle, potato chips, and a little bit of ketchup.

The burger had a nice pink and was juicy. The blue cheese was pretty damn sharp but I enjoyed it. I’ve never had an oyster on a burger before and I can’t really say whether this added or took away from the experience. All in all Oyster House serves up a solid burger.

If you’re going to Oyster House and are feeling a burger, the OH Burger will definitely satisfy your need. I must return (hopefully) soon to try the lobster roll! I’ve heard too many good things about that!

shake shack

It was an absolutely beautiful summer day on Wednesday. I met up with two college friends in Madison Square Park to mark my second visit to Shake Shack.

On my previous visit I ordered a Shack Burger, so this time around, I got a Shroom Burger (have I mentioned I love portobella mushroom burgers?). The Shack Burger consists of Black Angus beef with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, and Shack Sauce. The Shroom Burger consists of a crisp fried portobella, filled with muenster and cheddar, and topped with lettuce, tomato, and Shack Sauce.

To show you how good these burgers are, I attempted to take a photo of my friend making love to her burger (taking bites of it with such pleasure)…but she caught me and gave me a look of disgust. (Sorry Kathleen…)

It’s a shame that I have never tried their shakes, custards, or concretes yet. I’m just never THAT hungry… Hopefully one day..
