philly foodspotting pho eatup – february 2012

Last night we spent a cold evening warming up with hearty bowls of pho from Pho Ha in South Philly. Pho Ha offers serveral different meat options for their rice noodle soup. I opted for #15, the pho with steak, flank, tendon, tripe, and fatty flank. The bowls of pho were huge, even for a small (pictured above). It was damn good! They had a generous serving of noodles and beef thrown into a flavorful broth. Check out some other photos from the eatup:

foodspotting’s 2nd birthday party

One year ago from Sunday all of us Philly Foodspotters met for the first time at the late Adsum. Two years ago from Sunday, Foodspotting was launched by Alexa Andrzejewski , Ted Grubb and Soraya Darabi.

To celebrate the 2nd birthday, we gathered at Khyber Pass Pub in Old City where they offered us drink specials for the night. In addition to the great food and drink that Khyber offers, our own Philly Foodspotter & Cupcake Karma frontwoman, Jackie Seigle made a Foodspotting cake and cupcakes.

The cake had the Foodspotting logo on top and was made of an almond poundcake with strawberry and buttercream filling. The cupcakes were topped with various Philly food staples such as cheesesteaks, pretzels, and Tastykake Butterscotch Krimpets. Two different kinds of cupcakes were made, chocolate cake with chocolate peanut butter mousse filling and salted caramel buttercream and carrot cake with cream cheese frosting and toasted coconut. Everything was out of this world.

Check out some of the other spots from the event on the Foodspotting guide. Keep up with Philly Foodspotting on Twitter & Facebook.

Thanks a bunch to the Khyber Pass Pub staff and Jackie for the cakes!

philly foodspotting hot chocolate crawl – december 2011

Last night was Philly Foodspotting’s hot chocolate crawl. On the crawl were three Center City locations: Philly Chocolate, Capogiro Gelato, and Max Brenner.

The first stop was Philly Chocolate. Most of the group ordered the European Hot Chocolate (pictured above). It was very smooth and tasty!

At our second stop, Capogiro Gelato, several spotters opted to get gelato instead of the hot chocolate. Tom, however, as seen above, went for Italian hot chocolate.

Last, we made our way to Max Brenner. Max Brenner had a variety of different drinks to order from Italian hot chocolate to chocolate/tea drinks. Pictured above is the Swiss whipped hot dark chocolate.

Crawling for hot chocolate was fun! Hope you had a great time if you attended!

philly foodspotting weird food eatup – october 2011

For the Halloween season, I thought it’d be fun to do a weird food eatup around Philly. It was originally intended to be a crawl, but due to time constraints on a weeknight, I figured an eatup would be best. I chose Los Taquitos de Puebla in South Philly as our venue since it is home to several odd tacos, from head meat to eyeballs. Yes, eyeballs.

tacos de surtida

Unfortunately, it rained a good amount last Thursday so attendance was pretty slim. At the table sat me, fellow Foodspotter Lee, and his wife. Lee’s wife wasn’t too fond of giving the weird tacos a try, so me and Lee split the Tacos de Ojo (eyeball), Tacos de Trompa (lips), and Tacos de Surtida (mixed head meat).

We “toasted” and took our first bite of the eyeball tacos. It honestly wasn’t as unpleasant as I thought it would be. The texture was very chewy and fatty. Not the most desirable texture, but hey, it was chopped up and wasn’t looking at me! The other tacos had a similar fatty consistency but had much more meaty texture than the eyeballs did.

Check out the guide!
