down the shore 2 – the zahav boat

Last Thursday, Zahav held their 2nd annual Down the Shore party. This year, the theme was The Zahav Boat so the staff were dressed like shipmates and all guests were lei’d upon entry.

Down the Shore 2 featured an all-star chef lineup consisting of Pierre Calmels (Bibou), Jen Carroll (10 Arts), Monica Glass (10 Arts), David Katz (Meme), John Taus (The Corner), Peter Woolsey (Bistrot La Minette), Terence Feury (Fork), and of course, 2011 JBF Best Chef: Mid-Atlantic winner Mike Solomonov (Zahav).

Starting at 6 pm, guests were served several different small plates during the cocktail hour. In addition to the food, Harpoon beers were being served as was several different cocktails. The dishes the chefs served during the cocktail hour were as follows: Calmels – bouillabaise, poached dorade w/ lemon verbena; Carroll – scallop ceviche w/ toasted coconut; Katz – pork souvlaki; Taus – snapper fish sandwich w/ soda bread & garlic aioli; Woolsey – White Swan (cheese puff w/ beef & mushroom) & Black Swan (crab salad w/ tarragon mayo); Feury – lobster roll w/ pickled cucumbers.

In the side room, Monica Glass stood her post pouring shots of this delicious mango pina colada through the Zahav Boat ice sculpture. I personally don’t think we should have been limited to shots of this. We should have been getting these by the cupful. I may or may not have.

mike solo’s fried chicken

Once the cocktail hour was over, Mike Solo’s food was placed along the front and everyone formed a line buffet style. The dinner consisted of baked potatoes, salad, ham & pineapple, mac and cheese, eggplant parm sandwiches, and fried chicken. The fried chicken wasn’t a hint to the upcoming Federal Donuts was it??? Hmmmm…. It definitely had to be. It was delicious and had a crunchiness and outside texture that I’ve only experienced eating Korean fried chicken.

key lime pie

After the main course, I was in a food coma. The food was not over though, dessert was being served. Cups of key lime pie and chocolate mousse were being served in addition to cubes of watermelon topped with mint.

It would be an understatement to say that I had an awesome time. The food and drinks were excellent. The chefs and staff were all friendly and were having just as good of a time as the guests were. I also ran into a couple familiar faces and met some new ones. There’s no way you want to miss this party next year. I’m still kind of hating myself for missing last year’s!

meme – fried chicken

It took a long time but I finally made it out a few weeks ago to have Meme’s fried chicken which is only available on Thursdays for lunch.

A friend and I met up to try this highly spoken of fried chicken. With the fried chicken, you get the option of adding a side and a choice of lemonade, iced tea, or a beer. Of course, I went with the beer. Everything I read up to this point mentioned receiving the Champagne of Beers, so I was pretty pumped. Unfortunately, I received an Amstel Light…maybe they ran out?

Beer aside, the chicken was pretty delicious. I was served a thigh and leg piece. Excellent choices since I’m all about the dark meat. It came with a tasty and moist corn muffin and a buffalo dipping sauce. I took some bites with and some without the sauce. Couldn’t quite tell whether I enjoyed it more with or without, but it was great nonetheless. The added side was corn on the cob which was quite good.

Meme’s fried chicken lunch was great. If I had gotten a High Life, things would have been fantastic. Unfortunately, I started my new gig already so it’s going to be a while until I get another opportunity to try this. If you have a free Thursday, definitely come and check it out!

cuba libre – brunch without borders

Cuba Libre in Old City has a new menu for their 10th anniversary which has been inspired by Chef Guillermo Pernot’s recent trip to Cuba. One of the menu changes is their Brunch without Borders. Brunch without Borders is a $25, all-you-can-eat meal featuring several piqueos (small plates). Last Saturday, a friend and I certainly indulged until our stomachs reached their borders!

cafe cuba libre w/ shot of spiced rum

There were so many drinks to start the day off from coffees, tropical cocktails, and juices. I think I chose the best one though. My drink of choice was the Cafe Cuba Libre with an added shot of spiced rum. It’s Cuban coffee with steamed coconut milk and Cuba Libre spiced rum. This stuff was so ridiculously good. Could I have these everyday?

torta de cangrejo benedict

We certainly tried a ton of items, but the ones shown here were definitely our favorites. The Torta de Cangrejo Benedict was an interesting take on eggs benedict. It consisted of a jumbo lump crabmeat & potato cake topped with a poached egg and tomato Hollandaise served over an avocado mash.

cobbano salad

Another piqueo we ordered twice was the Cobbano Salad. Essentially a Cobb salad with Cuban flair, it had pulled pork, plaintains, hearts of palm, grape tomatoes, avocado, bacon, Cabrales cheese, hard boiled egg, scallions, watercress, and baby spinach tossed in a light mustard vinaigrette.

sopa levanta muerto

We may have also ordered the Sopa Levanta Muerto twice as well. Despite being fairly hot on Sunday, this was too good not to order twice. The translation means Raise the Dead Soup, which is named due to it’s consumption by those hungover to “raise spirits and body”…perfect for the Friday nights we both had. This soup had a delicious broth made up of some coconut milk and had crab meat, scallops, shrimp, and mussels.

To end our meal, we ordered the torreja (pictured above). It was a hazelnut and almond encrusted brioche French toast topped with strawberries, Frangelico-Mascarpone cheese, honey, and powdered sugar.

You can also order all these items a la carte should you not want to Brunch without Borders. Here is the rest of the brunch menu.

the food trust night market 2011

Last Thursday, The Food Trust held their second annual night market. This year, it was held in University City and featured a beer garden for Philly Beer Week. Several food trucks and vendors lined the perimeter of the parking lot while the beer stands and other restaurants had tables in the center.

smoked kielbasa

I showed up an hour from opening and several food trucks/vendors already had some pretty long lines. The pops and sis waited in the line for Guapos Tacos, the longest line there, while I wandered around to find some other stuff to try.

blt hot dog

The Dapper Dog‘s menu caught my eye and I immediately waited in line as soon as I saw their menu. I ordered a BLT hot dog with spicy mayo and smoked kielbasa with jalapeno relish & spicy mayo. Both of these were pretty damn good.

Tyson Bees had a good line forming as well. Later on in the evening I was able to enjoy a pork belly bun during the torrential downpour.

chipotle short rib tacos

Thanks to the pop and sis, I did get to try Guapos Tacos. Don’t hate on me too much, but I thought they were just alright. The green chile chicken left me hanging as I felt that it needed much more. The carnitas and short rib tacos were quite delicious though.

carnitas tacos

I heard that last year’s was pretty hectic and vendors even ran out of food. I think the night market was organized pretty well this year. If the thunderstorm didn’t come, I would have been able to hang out and eat a lot more! I’m definitely looking forward to next year’s.

philly foodspotting nostalgic picnic/squareburger – june 2011

Luckily the weather was nice last Sunday for our nostalgic picnic in Franklin Square Park. Instead of a crawl this Month, we decided to relax and meet for a picnic and spot some SquareBurger food.

We started off by ordering some food from SquareBurger. I’ve only been here once before for a Cake Shake and just didn’t have the appetite for food. But on Sunday, I finally tried a burger!

I couldn’t help but get a Cake Shake again. Honestly, how could you resist a shake made with vanilla ice cream, caramel, and a butterscotch krimpet?! I also settled on the Classic Cheeseburger, a standard burger with American cheese, pickles, onions, ketchup, and mustard. Both together were quite the delicious combo.

Since it was a nostalgic picnic, (mostly) everyone brought something reminiscent of childhood/teen years, whether it was a food, dessert, or even magazines! Among some of the stuff brought was Gummy Worms in “Dirt”, jawbreakers, wax bottles, TastyKakes, cupcakes, rice krispies treats, and teen magazines. I was kind of in a rush to get to the park and unfortunately forgot my Pogs!

Check out my spots for the shake and burger.

Keep up with Philly Foodspotting here.
