President’s Day was a good day. I had the day off from work, I was able to meet up with friends for lunch, and I was able to have a burger for lunch. That burger, however, was my last before going vegetarian for Lent for the third time.

The Misconduct Burger is made up of house ground Prime Angus beef. It comes topped with lettuce, tomato, and onion between a challah roll. My modifications/additions were caramelized onions instead of the raw and Fourme D’Ambert blue cheese.

The meat was cooked to medium rare and was super juicy. The challah bread was an excellent alternative to the brioche I’ve been often seeing on burgers. I love blue cheese on my burgers and this one was great, though it was different than any blue I’ve ever had on a burger. The Fourme D’Ambert was a slice instead of crumbles and had a much creamier, almost brie like texture to it. The accompanying fries were also tasty.

Not a bad last burger to have before the fast! Also, I got $3.50 off for Burger Monday, which I believe is a new special they started!

zac’s hamburgers

(Almost) immediately after consuming an Iron Hill burger, me and my fellow indulgent eater friend noticed this Five Guys-esque looking place just down the street called Zac’s Hamburgers. Since we live in Philly and rarely come out to Media, the decision was made to try this local burger chain.

The interior definitely had a Five Guys feel to it, with the colors being black and white over red and white. Zac’s offers a couple different burger variations ranging from a single hamburger to a double bacon cheeseburger. They also have chicken and fish sandwiches, different types of fries, and milkshakes. There is a list of all the available toppings you could add to your burger; you could also add “everything” to it. Everything doesn’t include lettuce (not sure why), but it does include tomatoes, relish, pickles, ketchup, mustard, onions, and sweet peppers.

I went with a bacon cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, fried onions, and mustard. My friend went with a cheeseburger with everything. The burgers are griddled and served on a white bun. It wasn’t bad, though I was shocked when I noticed they used spicy brown mustard over the yellow. I’m a big fan of spicy brown on other sandwiches, though here I felt it overpowered the burger. My friend described his burger as overwhelming with everything on it. We also split an order of fries which were nothing special.

I definitely want to come back, except next time I may order mine with just fried onions and cheese. It would probably be smart to not follow up a burger with another, too!

linvilla orchards

I’ve been in the Philly area for almost three years now and ever since then I’ve always seen ads or have heard about Linvilla Orchards. It’s definitely been on my list of places to go but just never found a group who’d be interested in going. Luckily for me, I woke up Saturday morning and my housemate told me that she was going with a couple other friends to check out the tree maze and play some mini-golf. It was so beautiful out that I couldn’t help but tag along.

Linvilla Orchards is a farm located in Media, Pennsylvania, which is open year round. They offer fresh fruit and vegetable picking as well as activities like corn mazes and hay rides in the fall. Currently, they have a Christmas tree maze and the Fore! the Planet mini-golf course which was created by the Academy of Natural Sciences.

Of course, I didn’t just go to Linvilla just to run through a maze or to play some mini-golf. I went to try two things that I’ve heard are great at Linvilla: apple cider doughnuts and pie. The doughnut was fresh and delicious. Linvilla had several pies to offer, though I opted for the dutch apple and it was one of the best dutch apple pies I’ve had!

I already want to go back, even if it’s just for another apple pie. Glad I finally made it out!

iron hill brewery & restaurant: media – kennett square burger

About a year or so ago, I checked out Iron Hill’s Maple Shade location and really enjoyed the Rising Sun IPA. Their signature burger, the Brewski Burger, left me unfulfilled and wanting more. Last weekend, a couple of friends and I were in Media and we stopped into Iron Hill for some brews and dinner.

To quench my thirst, I went with their seasonal sampler which consisted of their Belgian Tripel, Oatmeal Stout, Barleywine, Wee Heavy, Belgian Pale Ale, Hefeweizen, and Munich Dunkel (CW from top left in above photo).

I decided to give the burgers another shot. This time, I went with the Kennett Square Burger. Since Kennett Square is known as the mushroom capital of the world, a main topping on this burger is herb roasted exotic mushrooms. In addition to the mushrooms, a generous cut of smoked gouda is placed on top. The burger is sandwiched between a white bun which has shallot-black pepper aioli spread on both halves. A cup of slaw, fries, and a pickle accompany the burger.

It was better than the previous burger I had for sure, though it was still slightly unfulfilling. The bun had an airiness to it, though the crust was surprisingly more chewy than I expected. With every bite I took, I got stuck on the bun. It took a little bit more to pull away from the burger. I had the burger cooked to a medium rare, though it looked and tasted more on the medium side. Lastly, there were some burgerless bites which just consisted of the bun towards the end.

So I may not be into the burgers from Iron Hill, but the apps we ordered were tasty. One of them, pictured above, was the Grilled Alsatian Flatbread which is made up of beer braised onions, applewood smoked bacon, gruyere, and chives.

In May, Iron Hill serves a different burger every day in honor of burger month. It sounded like a lot of fun last year though I never made it out. Perhaps, I’ll try a burger again in May?

wells fargo center: grille works – angus double cheeseburger

Last Saturday afternoon I was at the Wells Fargo Center for Rangers/Flyers. Being a 1 pm game and I left my apartment at 11.30, I was feeling pretty hungry after the first period. I very rarely eat food at sporting events, not just because the food is overpriced, but because it’s also rather underwhelming and unsatisfying.

Throughout the first period (and the rest of the game), food ads would flash at the corners of the “jumbotron”. I found out that there was a place in the arena that had burgers! I told my friend that I was going to get one during the first intermission. The place offering burgers was Grille Works, located between sections 112 and 113. For $8.50, I ordered an angus double cheeseburger with low expectations and a slight glimmer of hope that this would be awesome.

The two griddled patties are both topped with American cheese and are placed on a sesame seed bun with lettuce, tomato, and chopped raw onions. I enjoyed it as it had a slight backyard, childhood bbq taste and feel to it; I’m talking buying frozen patties, topping it with yellow American (I grew up with yellow, not white), and serving it on grocery store bought sesame seed buns. Yes, the price tag of $8.50 is still a tad steep, but it is arena food after all. The burger certainly exceeded my lower expectations and I would definitely think about getting it again if I needed food at WFC.
