momofuku milk bar

Located next to David Chang’s Má Pechê, is Chang’s Momofuku Milk Bar. Milk Bar is a bakery serving all sorts of things from cookies to frozen yogurt. When I visited, I was like a kid in a candy store…with a budget of course. There were so many other things I wanted to try.

First was the Anderson Cooper endorsed crack pie. It was smooth and rich with a lot of butterscotchy flavor. The crust was tasty too. Not sure if it’s worth the hype though.

Some NYC friends started to mention these birthday cake truffles in tweets and I immediately added that to my list. These were extremely indulgent. Very sweet but it definitely tasted like birthday cake. There were three truffles to a pack and luckily I shared em with two other friends because there’s no way you can stomach more than one.

I then tried the corn cookie. The corn cookie had flavors very reminiscent of Mexican cornbread/corn cake. I mean that in a good way. It was pleasant tasting and not overly sweet.

The cornflake cookie is probably my favorite one. Some of the ingredients are cornflakes, marshmallows, and chocolate chips. Delicious. It may be a touch sweet, but not as sweet as the forementioned truffles. The texture was interesting too, it had some crunchiness from the added cornflakes.

The blueberry & cream cookie was great too. There was almost a blueberry in every bite and it had a somewhat “creamy” feel due to the added milk powder.

If you’re a peanut or peanut butter fan, you’ll totally love Milk Bar’s peanut butter cookie. It’s got peanut butter and pieces of peanut brittle in it! Really enjoyed this one, it was simple and delicious.

The compost cookie is interesting. Some of the ingredients are graham crumbs, potato chips, pretzels, chocolate chips, butterscotch, oats, and coffee grounds. The taste is sweet and salty and has a chewy and crunchy texture.

For you Philly folks that can’t make the trip up, Green Aisle on East Passyunk Avenue gets about two shipments every week. Just call em ahead of time and they can reserve some for you!

trendy sweets

Formerly in Haddon Heights, NJ, this cupcakery recently moved and set up shop at the Moorestown Mall. I’ve had their cupcakes every once in a while now and the red velvet has been my favorite of theirs.

This past weekend though, I tried a turtle cupcake. I’m not crazy about chocolate cakes or cupcakes but holy crap was this good. They’ve got your typical turtle ingredients/flavors of chocolate, pecans, and caramel but there was something there that really elevated the flavor. That was salt. The caramel is salted! Ever since I had the budino at Barbuzzo I’ve been in love with the flavor of salted caramel.

I never thought I’d like another cupcake variety over red velvet. Looks like I’m getting turtle cupcakes when I come here now.

flying monkey – pumpple cake

The Pumpple cake is the creation of Elizabeth Halen, owner of Flying Monkey at the Reading Terminal Market in Philly. I’m a little late in trying this. Rephrase, I’m extremely late in trying this. It debuted during the holiday season of 2010 and I never had a chance to get my hands on it and every time I did stop by there was none left. Finally got my hands on it this past Sunday though.

It has been called the “turducken” of desserts. It’s a very large cake, which consists of an apple pie baked in a layer of vanilla cake, a pumpkin pie baked into a layer of chocolate cake, and all covered with buttercream frosting.

Like other foods put into foods, it’s definitely a novelty, but I found this novelty to taste good! The apple pie was my favorite part. Luckily for me, I had two other friends to share the slice with, there’s no way I could consume that entire slice.

Unfortunately, by the time you read this, Flying Monkey will no longer be selling slices of Pumpple. Last Sunday was the final day. They will be making Pumpple on special order though.

After lots of hype from NYC friends and other fellow foodies I had to give Crumbs a try. I swung by their Midtown location on Broadway and got 4 different varieties…

(listed clockwise from top)
Madison Avenue: vanilla cake, chocolate ganache, raspberry preserves, almonds

Cookie Dough: vanilla cake, cream cheese frosting w/ choco chip cookie pieces

Peanut Butter Cup: chocolate cake, pb cream cheese frosting, pb cup topping, crushed peanuts, chocolate chips

Red Velvet: red velvet cake, cream cheese frosting, red velvet crumbs, white sprinkles

Favorite was the red velvet…I’m a sucker for red velvet and cream cheese frosting.
