khyber pass pub

If you know me well enough, you’re probably aware that I’m a huge fan of this place. I’m cozy when I’m here – it’s the beer, the food, the music, and the atmosphere.

baby spinach salad

Through my previous visits, I’ve had a ton of different brews from their killer list of beers, on tap and in bottles. My love for Voodoo Cowbell was also born here. Psst, it should be on tap there now as you read this…if not already kicked…

I’ve also been able to try a bunch of different food. Just to name a few: bacon grease popcorn, debris fries, fried green tomatoes. That bacon grease popcorn is pretty damn good. If you’re not vegetarian/vegan and not watching your figure, try out the popcorn. Make sure you’ve got a lot of people to share it with you cause you WILL feel a little guilty about it. The debris fries are another decadent but delicious item on the menu. These fries are covered in smoked cheddar, beef, and gravy.

One particular item on the menu has my heart (and stomach) won are the po boy sandwiches. Khyber even uses Leidenheimer rolls for em! I’ve tried the vegan fried chicken, the oyster, and a half/half of oyster and shrimp. All of them were fantastic.

More recently, I had lunch with some friends this past weekend and here’s some of what was ordered:

sammy po boy – fried chicken, ham, swiss w/ a side of mac & cheese

half ‘n’ half po boy – oysters & shrimp w/ a side of mac & cheese

Also ordered was the baby spinach salad (pictured above), gumbo, and catfish po boy (special).

The half ‘n’ half po boy might officially be my favorite item on the menu, though I was rather shocked to find out that the half ‘n’ half was one half oyster po boy, and the other half shrimp po boy. I assumed it was going to be two halves of mixed oyster and shrimp. Maybe I’m just being a clown, IT IS called the half ‘n’ half after all. Maybe I can ask for it mixed next time? The mac and cheese is pretty good too. The only other side I’ve had were the onion rings which were enjoyable.

I have not yet had a burger here. Embarrassing considering you are reading bridges, burgers & beer. I promise to get one soon and report back!

beer: brooklyn black ops

This purchase was spur of the moment. I never expected to see this beer again. The first and only time I had it was last summer at a Vosges Haut Chocolat/Brooklyn Brewery tasting in SoHo. It just so happened that I ran into two bottles at a local store down here. As soon as I saw them, it was a no brainer, I had to buy them both.

Black Ops is a stout which has been aged in bourbon barrels. It’s also 11.3% but goes down smooth. A friend described it as a chocolate champagne and I couldn’t agree more. Black Ops is delicious.

If you ever, ever, ever get an opportunity to try this brew, DO IT. You will not be disappointed.

beer: flying fish exit series

Such a beautiful sight.

Flying Fish has only released six different exits so far (in the order of release):

Exit 4 – American Trippel
Exit 11 – Hoppy American Wheat
Exit 1 – Bayshore Oyster Stout
Exit 16 – Wild Rice Double IPA
Exit 6 – Wallonian Rye
Exit 13 – Chocolate Stout

Exit 4 is available year round and Exit 13 is the current release. Recently, I was lucky to get one of each since a local store had a couple bottles in reserve. The only one I haven’t tried is the Exit 11. My favorites are the Exit 13 and Exit 16.

Has anyone else tried any of the Exit Series beers? What do you think?

Find out more about the Exit Series here.

beer: dogfish head festina peche

This was an impulse buy of mine the other day. It looked interesting so I picked it up…

Festina Peche is a peach Berliner Weisse style beer, which is characterized by it’s tart and sour taste. It’s also intended to be a summer beer I believe, so I’m kind of drinking this out of season. Oh well, I think it tastes pretty good!

beer: dogfish head midas touch

I picked a bottle of this up when I was mixing a 6 pack a few weeks ago. It’s 9% ABV, but doesn’t feel so. There’s a nice sweetness to the beer and it has an interesting flavor due to the ingredients: saffron, honey, grapes. It also smells and tastes kinda spicy. Definitely enjoyed it; a great change compared to what I’m normally drinking.

Hope everyone has some fun New Years Eve plans tomorrow! Can’t wait to start off fresh in 2011.
