sketch (vegetarian visit)

My housemate has never been to Sketch. We made sure to change that fact this past weekend. Part of me was upset I couldn’t have a burger made from meat, but the other part was looking forward to trying their vegetarian/vegan options that they had to offer.

On the burger side of the menu, the only options (for me) are vegan burger and seitan. The vegan burger is a housemate patty made from several different types of beans and spices. I asked about the seitan and was told that it was like “pulled pork” and could be served as a barbecue sandwich or even a cheesesteak. As soon as she mentioned cheesesteak, I jumped at the opportunity! I’ve been wanting a vegetarian cheesesteak for the past couple days.

The orders were in, mine was a seitan cheesesteak with grilled onions and cheddar and the housemate’s was a vegan burger with cheddar and chipotle sauce. We both went halfsies so I was able to try some of the burger, too. The burger came on the same LeBus bun that their other burgers are served on. It was topped with cheddar, lettuce, tomato, and chipotle sauce. The bean burger was tasty and very hearty. The outside had a slight, pleasant crisp to the outside. The inside had a lot of flavor and wasn’t dry. The seitan cheesesteak outshined the burger though, in my opinion. Firstly, the cheesesteak was served on a fresh roll, a definite plus. I originally had second thoughts about ordering it with the cheddar since I didn’t think it would end up as gooey as American. Sketch, however, served that cheesesteak with hot, gooey cheddar! The onions were delicious. They were grilled long enough that they had some caramelization to it. The seitan was some of the best seitan I’ve had. It was juicy and tasted like it was marinated. I’ve only had one seitan cheesesteak before which was good, but this was definitely superior.

Oh, we also got their belgian fries and an additional order of the green chili cheese fries. Yes, I’m aware it’s a lot of food, but I should mention that one of our friends joined us later to eat 70% of the fries! I won’t judge her.

Check out my last visit to Sketch.

If you’re vegetarian or just feel like abstaining from meat for a meal, Sketch has two excellent options for you!

kraftwork – kraftwork burger

I’ve been eyeing up the Kraftwork Burger every time I’ve come into Kraftwork. Since I’ve been having a burger a week lately, I ordered one for brunch last weekend.

The Kraftwork Burger consists of a dry aged blend of beef, lettuce, pickles, and a choice of cheese/topping (additional cheese/toppings are 50ยข extra). I ordered mine medium-rare with a Port Reyes blue and bacon-red onion marmalade. This burger was crazy juicy. Immediately after the first bite, the juices ran all over and down my hand. The bacon-red onion marmalade was a pretty good substitute for caramelized onions. In addition to the saltiness of the bacon, the red onions are caramelized and have a touch of sweetness. The burger is accompanied with tasty fries and a porter mustard aioli. My only complaint is that the burger to bun ratio wasn’t close to equal. I had a bite or two of burgerless bun at the end. Definitely a burger worth ordering again though.

sketch

Not too long ago I had a burger dinner with friends, Vinny and Melissa, at Sketch in Fishtown. Sketch and it’s multicolored storefront are located on the north side of Girard Avenue, you can’t miss this place!

sweet potato fries

Melissa constantly talked about sweet potato fries and how superior they were, especially compared to regular fries. Lucky for us, Sketch’s sweet potato fries were on special that night. We started off with an order of those. I haven’t had sweet potato fries often, but these were pretty good. They were slightly crispy with a soft inside. It also came out with a chipotle sauce. Only bummer is that most of the fries were about an inch or less long. That made for annoying fry eating.

Sketch’s menu was pretty huge and I definitely took a little bit before I decided what to order. All the burgers are made with an 8 oz. patty and are served on a LeBus country white bun with shredded lettuce, tomato, and choice of sauce. I went with a medium rare beef burger with blue cheese, grilled onions, and chipotle sauce. A couple bites in, I realized that it was cooked more than medium rare. Luckily, the burger was still pretty juicy and tasty. Also, the bun held up pretty well and didn’t crumble apart into my container.

If you find yourself in Fishtown and are craving a burger, stop in at Sketch and check it out!
