five leaves – five leaves burger

Last week I met up with a friend for lunch in Greenpoint, Brooklyn at Five Leaves. Her suggestion was not just for the close location to her apartment (she had lots to do), but more because she thought this burger was worth me trying.

The menu offers two burgers, though I opted for their signature burger, the Five Leaves Burger, also the one that Amy recommended. She also got the same. The order was two Five Leaves Burgers, medium rare, with truffle fries. Yup, you read that correctly. These burgers have the option of coming with truffle fries!

The Five Leaves Burger consists of a grass-fed beef patty, a fried pineapple ring, house pickled beet, harissa mayo, and an organic sunny side up egg. I added sharp cheddar to the burger.

Oh, it certainly was worth me trying. The beef was cooked to perfection. Each bite was juicy and had a balance of sweet and savory. I never would have thought to put a pineapple on a burger, but it totally works here. I’m not entirely sure if the beet affected anything, but it didn’t bother me. I patted myself on the back for the addition of the sharp cheddar. This was the tastiest cheddar I’ve ever had on a burger. Every bite had a taste of the melted sharp cheddar. The egg was also nice and runny, the way it should be on a burger. The truffle fries that accompanied the burger were delicious as well!

I would very much like to come back to Five Leaves again in the future (Amy are you reading this??). The Five Leaves Burger is definitely one of the best burgers I’ve ever had.

Go out and try it!

peter pan donut & pastry shop

One morning in Brooklyn I made the trip up to Greenpoint to visit Peter Pan Donut & Pastry Shop. The decision to come here that morning was made easy due to several recommendations from others.

Not having the largest appetite that morning, I ordered two donuts, one red velvet and one honey dip. The honey dip was similar to a glazed donut and the red velvet was a cake donut. Both were tasty and in addition to my iced coffee, it started my day off on the right foot.

I wish I took note of what others have told me. I’m pretty sure there was something special here besides the donuts that I should have tried. Oh well, there’s always next time.

Ever have these donuts? What do you think?
